Needlepoint Kneelers
Stained Glass Windows
St. James' Coat of Arms
BRONZE PLAQUES
The stained glass windows and various bronze plaques commemorate individuals who have given years of service and dedication to St. James’ Church.
BANNERS
Banners behind the lecturn and pulpit are those of the Diocese of Virginia on the east and of Shelburne Parish on the west.
MARBLE TABLETS
Marble tablets in the Sanctuary bear the Ten Commandments, the Lord’s Prayer, and the Apostles’ Creed; they date at least from the first St. James’ of 1812. There is reason to believe that they may have been among the furnishings of the original Chapel of Ease. The tablets are unique in Virginia. They are thought to be the only ones in existence which have the quaint phrasing, “He went into the place of departed Spirits,” for the usual phrase, “He descended into Hell.” Also, the frequent mistakes and omissions in spelling are corrected by placing the missing letter above the word.
FLAGS
The flags displayed at St. James’ represent the civil and religious jurisdictions that have been, or still are, in existence in Loudoun County:
· Flag of the United States of America
· Flag of the Commonwealth of Virginia
· The Loudoun County banner taken from the Arms of the Earl of Loudoun, for whom the county is named
· The King’s Color of 1769, the British flag in the year the parish was organized
· The flag of the Episcopal Church in the Untied States of America
· The old arms of the Diocese of Virginia
· The arms of the Shelburne with Cameron Parish
· The personal flag of General of the Army George C. Marshall, author of the Marshall Plan, given by his family to be displayed at St. James’, where he was a longtime worshipper.
