Today at St. James’

¨      Adult Forum:  Join us for this Bible study series, “What’s the first thing Jesus says after he’s raised from the dead?”   Today: “What are you discussing as you walk along?”  “How foolish you are, and how slow of heart!” and “Do you have anything here to eat?” 10:10 a.m. in the Old School Building.

¨      Sunday School:  3-Year-Olds meet in Rittenhouse Room R1; 4-Year-Olds meet in Janney House Room J2; Kindergarten meets in Janney House Room J1; 1st Grade meets in Rittenhouse Room R3; 2nd & 4th Grades meet in Parish Hall; 3rd Grade meets in Parish Library; 5th Grade & Middle School meet in the Old School Building; Senior High will meet in the Catacombs.

¨      Exploring the Episcopal Church:  If you have been baptized but never confirmed and would like to be, or if you were baptized as a Christian and confirmed in another denomination and wish to be received into the Episcopal Church, join us for “Exploring the Episcopal Church.”  This three-part class begins TODAY, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the Old School Building, and continues on Sunday, May 4 (same time and place), and on Saturday, May 17, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 Noon, in the Parish Hall.

¨      Youth Groups:  Youth Groups will go to Woody’s Golf Range for Putt Putt (rain or shine, unless it’s really pouring!)  Please meet at St. James’ at 2:30 p.m.; we do need a few parent drivers.  Cost is $9.25.

Notice of Congregational Meeting: Please plan to attend a Congregational Meeting on Sunday, May 4, at 10:00 a.m., in the Nave. In addition to having a chance to consider and vote on a design plan for the parking lot (planned for the 2010-2012 timeframe), you’ll receive an update on exciting progress being made toward our overall vision.

Several “in” Reach Opportunities:

¨      Put Some Meaning Behind Your Spring Cleaning:  We have a special opportunity to help a fellow St. James’ family, the Rombachs, whose daughter, Shelby, has Cystic Fibrosis, who are organizing a “Kids Stuff Only” yard sale on May 3.  Donations of gently used toys clothes, books, sports equipment, etc. will be collected on the stage in Parish Hall through May 2.  All money raised will go to help cure Cystic Fibrosis.  Flyers with details of the yard sale are on stage in the Parish Hall.

¨      Come sweat it out for a good cause!  The Oldham family of St. James’ invites you to participate in their Exercise-a-thon on Saturday, May 17, at Gold’s Gym in Leesburg to benefit Korlan Oldham (19 months, diagnosed with Type I mitochrondrial disease) and Gareth Oldham (3 ½, diagnosed with moderate to severe autism.)  Aerobics, yoga and cycling/spinning, fitness testing and more will offered from 8:00 a.m.—12:00 Noon.  The event is open to the community; there is a suggested minimum donation of $5 per activity.  Contact Casandra Oldham through the Church Office at (703)777-1124 for more information.

¨      Great Strides "Megan's Walk" Sunday, May 18, at    10:00 a.m.  Many St. James’ parishioners mourned the loss of young Megan Stewart to Cystic Fibrosis last September.  Many also know that one of our own parishioners, 14-year-old Shelby Rombach, was diagnosed with this devastating genetic disease just two summers ago.  Here is your chance to show support for Shelby, and honor Megan’s life by participating in Megan’s Walk.  There’s still plenty of time to register as a fundraising walker at www.cff.org/great_strides, or to make an online donation to any team or walker. For more information, contact Jan Joseph through the Church Office at (703)777-1124.

¨      Help beautify the altar:  The Altar Guild will conduct a flower arranging class on Saturday, May 24, at 9:00 a.m. in the Sacristy for anyone who would like to join Altar Guild and become a flower arranger.  Altar Guild also take care of the tableware, linens, and cleaning in the Sanctuary, as well as clean-up and set-up in-between the Sunday services.  We have four teams, each responsible for one week of each month.  If you are interested, please contact the Church Office at (703)777-1124.

¨      Youth Mission Shares: The youth are selling shares in their summer mission trips to North Carolina, Liberia, West Virginia, and Mississippi. Shares cost $10 a piece, and all proceeds go to mission. As a shareholder, you will receive a postcard from the youth on their mission site, and you will be invited to our shareholders’ dinner in August. Please stop by the table in the Narthex to purchase shares.

¨      Local Homeless: Parishioner Anna Mitchum invites you to help provide food and fellowship for The Woods, a local Leesburg homeless shelter, twice a month.  To learn more, contact Anna Mitchum through the Church Office at (703)777-1124.

¨      The St. James’ Book Club will discuss Dance of the Dissident Daughter on Thursday, May 8, at 7:00 p.m.  Join us in the Janney Parlor as we explore author Sue Monk Kidd’s inspirational story of spiritual awakening and transformation.  Please bring a snack or beverage to share.  Contact Mary Pellicano through the Church Office at (703)777-1124 for more information. (Want to get a head start on next month’s book?  We’ll be reading Water for Elephants in June.)

¨      The Contemplative Prayer Group meets in the Nave every Monday and Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.

¨      St. Gabriel’s Saturday Night Service (5:30 p.m.) returns to the St. James’ Nave on Saturday, May 3.  St. Gabriel’s Saturday Night Life service will welcome Dion Jergo and his contemporary Gospel choir “Heavenly” on Saturday, May 10, at 5:30 p.m. It’s Pentecost weekend, so wear red and expect to be fired up by the Holy Spirit!

¨      Vacation Bible School—July 14-18: Once again, we will be teaming with Leesburg Presbyterian Church. Registration forms are now available in the Narthex and on our website at www.stjamesleesburg.org.  VBS does tend to fill, but parishioners are given first priority until May 25. Sign up soon!

¨      Pastoral Care: Expecting a baby? Having scheduled or unscheduled surgery? Recovering at home or in a nursing/rehab center? Fr. John, Rev. Kate, and Pastor Mary visit parishioners in these and other situations to pray with them. If you would like a clergy visit, contact the Church Office at (703)-777-1124.

¨      Looking Sharp! The Photo Directories are due to be delivered at the end of May.

¨      The print publication of Loaves & Fishes has been temporarily suspended, as we re-evaluate its purpose, content, and design. In the meantime, keep up with the events at St. James’ through these blue weekly Announcements, and by subscribing to the weekly E-Pistle, containing an electronic link to the Announcements along with a brief inspirational or informational message from one of the clergy.
