This devotional includes reflections and artwork by St. James’ parishioners, and is a helpful daily reading resource for the 40 days of Lent.
2008 PLEDGE ENVELOPES ARE HERE! For those of you who have not picked up your offering envelopes, this will be the last Sunday they are available on the Outreach table, in the Narthex. 20S/30S GROUP DINNER: Tuesday, February 12, at 7:00 p.m., at Jennifer & Mike Galvin’s home. The theme is “the ’80s”, so please bring a picture of yourself from the ’80s! If you have some ’80s clothes to wear—even better. We have plenty of power ballads to play and you are welcome to bring other music as well. This is a potluck style dinner. Those with the last name beginning with: A-K: bring a main dish, M-S: bring a side dish, and T-Z: bring a dessert.
“DO NOTHING TO CHANGE YOUR LIFE” Join Rev. Kate on Wednesday, February 13, from 7:00-9:00 p.m., for the first of a five-part series in which we’ll explore what happens when we slow down… and… stop for awhile. Hearty soup and crusty bread provided; childcare available.
BOOK CLUB: John Bul Dau is a Dinka from Southern Sudan and one of thousands of Lost Boys who fled their homeland during Sudanese civil war. He chronicles his harrowing tale of survival in the inspiring autobiography, God Grew Tired of Us. Join the St. James’ Book Club when we discuss this moving memoir Thursday, February 14, at 7:00 p.m. in the Janney Parlor. All are welcome! Please bring a snack or beverage to share. Contact Mary Pellicano through the Church Office at (703)777-1124 for more information.
ST. GABRIEL’S SATURDAY NIGHT SERMON SERIES: “Who are you?” Join St. Gabriel’s for the weeks leading up to Easter as we explore who Jesus is and what that tells us about our own identities. St. Gabriel’s Saturday Night Service, Saturdays at 5:30 p.m. in St. James’ Nave. www.saintgabriels.net or (703)779-3616.
NOLA ORGANIZATIONAL MEETING: Sunday, February 17, at 12:45 p.m. in the Janney Parlor. Join Fr. John and other parishioners as we travel to New Orleans for the fourth time to help with the Katrina rebuild effort. Come for all or part of the trip. There is still much work to be done to get victims of the hurricane back into their homes. We will be staying in the Chalstrom House (Garden District) as guests of the Episcopal Diocese of LA. No special skills are necessary (we will be taught what to do) although handyman experience is a plus. Parishioner Pete Nunnally recently headed south to serve as an intern leader, and he will be our “boss.” We will work hard and play hard. Bourbon Street, Rock ’n Bowl, famous New Orleans cuisine, and a visit to a Gospel Choir Church are all on the agenda. Scholarships are available for travel, etc. (missioners must be 18 or older) Contact Mike “Chief” Nunnally for more information through the Church Office at (703)777-1124 or email.
NEW HANDS-ON OUTREACH OPPORTUNITY: On Tuesday, February 19, a small group of parishioners will be going to The Woods, three houses located off Evergreen Mill Road used as emergency shelter, to prepare and serve dinner to the residents, and engage them in conversation. Contact Anna Mitchum.
INSTRUCTED EUCHARIST FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CHILDREN: Thursday, February 21, at 4:00 p.m. Pastor Mary will walk children through the service of Eucharist at an age-appropriate level. This gathering is geared for all children—those who have been receiving Communion, and those who have not. We will talk about what Eucharist is, why we say the words we do, and what Eucharist means for our everyday lives. Families are welcome to attend.
THE HARD WORK AND HEART WORK OF ADULT OUTREACH: New Orleans. West Virginia. Liberia. Leesburg. KWP KIDS are out to “Change” the world… and we mean change. The cold weather has arrived with our winter session, and KWP is collecting change in Heat-A-Home banks. The money will go to a program that helps families with their heating bills when they need it the most. If you have loose change that you would like to contribute, then please find our Heat-A-Home bank located in the Narthex.
