“Why it’s good to
have both GPS and a rear-view mirror, not only in
your car, but in your church and in your life,” the conclusion of a new three-part sermon and Adult Forum
series, “Living in the Spirit: Being Alive vs. Truly Living.” Next
Sunday, February 3, we’ll wrap up this series with a discussion about what it
means to live in the Spirit. 10:10 a.m.

Youth
Groups will meet at the Purcellville Skate Rink today! Middle
School will skate from 2:30-4:00, and Senior High from 3:30-5:00. Cost is $5.
Meet directly at the skating rink.
Do you still have palms
left over from
last year’s Palm Sunday service? Bring them to church and place them in the
basket in the back of the Nave. We will
collect them until February
3. They are burned
and become the ashes used for Ash Wednesday.

February 6: The penitential season of Lent begins. Services will be
held at 6:30 a.m., 12:00 Noon,
6:00 p.m. (Children’s service), and 7:30 p.m.
2008 Pledge Envelopes are
here!
You may pick up your boxes of 2008 pledge envelopes
from the tables at the back of the church behind the pews. Starting February 3, they will be available
in the Narthex. If you
do not find your box or if you would like to request a box of pledge envelopes,

Middle
School Youth Group will head to the mountains of West Virginia for its
annual ski trip on February
1-3. Cost is
$140, and we will stay at the home of Ken & Bonnie Getty (and rent one
additional condo). Please contact Pastor

Newcomers, Save the Date! Our Newcomer Coffees are recommencing after
our break for the Christmas holidays. We
extend to all of you a warm welcome to St. James’, and an invitation to join us
in the Janney Parlor on Sunday, February 3, at 10:15 a.m. It is your
special coffee time when you can meet clergy and fellow parishioners, receive
an informative Welcome packet, and ask your questions.
Loudoun Volunteer Caregivers
(LVC) is a community
of volunteers helping frail elderly and adults with disabilities to maintain
independence and quality of life. Nancy
Sutton of LVC will present an informational session on services provided and
volunteer opportunities within LVC.
Please join us on February 7, in the
Parish Hall at 7:00 p.m. for coffee and desert while we learn more about the services
that LVC provides. If you have any

20s/30s Group Dinner: Tuesday, February 12, at
7:00 p.m., at Jennifer & Mike Galvin’s home. The theme is “the 80s”, so please bring a
picture of yourself from the 80s! If you have some 80s clothes to wear - even better. We have plenty of power ballads to play and
you are welcome to bring other music as well.
This is a potluck style dinner.
Those with the last name beginning with: A-K: bring a main dish, M-S:
bring a side dish, and T-Z: bring a dessert.
The
St. James’
Outreach Committee is restructuring to include a
‘hands-on’ division. Please join us on February
13, at 7:00 p.m. in the Rittenhouse Basement as we

Book
Club: John Bul Dau is a Dinka
from Southern Sudan and one of thousands of Lost Boys who fled their homeland
during Sudanese civil war. He chronicles
his harrowing tale of survival in the inspiring autobiography, God Grew Tired of Us. Join the St.
James’ Book Club when we discuss this moving memoir Thursday,
February 14, at 7:00 p.m. in the Janney Parlor. All

Start Spreading the News: Our Senior High Youth Group is heading to New York
City February 15-17! We will stay at the
Cathedral of St. John the Divine, tour the city, and see “The Lion King.” All
of our youth spots are filled, but we could use one more adult chaperone. We need someone who has knowledge of NYC and
can help us navigate the subway system.

Instructed
Eucharist for Elementary School Children: Thursday, February 21, at 4:00 p.m. Pastor Mary
will walk children through the service of Eucharist at an age-appropriate level. This gathering is geared for all children—those who
have been receiving Communion, and those who have not. We will talk about what
Eucharist is, why we say the words we do, and what Eucharist means for our
everyday lives. Families are welcome to attend.

Flower Dedications: Honor
a loved one, give thanks for an anniversary or accomplishment, or commemorate a
loved one’s birthday or death by sponsoring flowers for the St. James’
Episcopal Church altar or other
worship related expenses.

to “St. James’ Church”
with “Altar Flowers/Worship Expenses” in the memo line.
Summer Youth Mission Trips: Plans are in the works for our summer youth mission
trips. Final dates will be published at the end of January, but if you are an
adult who is interested in joining us for a trip to North Carolina, West
Virginia, Gulfport, MS, or rural Virginia, contact with Pastor Mary.
We have set Baptism
dates from now through July, and the
baptisms are preceded by a four-part preparation class held on Sunday
mornings. Parents are welcome to attend
the classes even before their baby comes home.

Registration: Deadlines
for registration are: February 8 for St.
James’ & St. Gabriel’s active members; February 15 for returning students
and their siblings; February 22 for graduating student siblings, alumni, and
community members. Please note: A non-refundable application fee of $100.00
applies.
Now Hiring: The
Nursery is now hiring dependable adults to work in the nursery during the 9:00 and 11:15 Sunday services. Schedule can be flexible and pay is terrific. For

Help Your Neighbor: Even though the holidays are over, hunger still exists
in Loudoun County. Interfaith Relief is
in need of non-perishable food items, especially fruit juice, canned fruit, and
macaroni and cheese. Please leave the
items for donation in the Narthex for pick-up.
Prayer Shawl Ministry: Interested in knitting or crocheting a prayer

KWP
Kids are out to “Change” the
world… and we mean change. The cold weather has arrived with our winter
session, and KWP is collecting change in Heat-A-Home banks. The money will go to a program that helps
families with their heating bills when they need it the most. If you have loose change that you would like to
contribute, then please find our Heat-A-Home bank located in the Narthex.
