Today at St. James’

¨       Adult Forum:  Why conflict happens when there is growth in an individual, group, or church….Christian conversion is not so much a one-time emotional experience as a life-long process of apprenticeship...The messiness of mixing church and politics… The challenge of wealth and possessions…. All these issues sound current, but they were exactly what our church was wrestling with 2,000 years ago, and has been ever since. Join us as we take a fresh look at the Book of Acts, examining how this ancient, powerful, exciting text can help us today. Led by Fr. John and Rev. Kate, Adult Forum runs from 10:10 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the Old School Building, corner of Wirt and North Streets.

¨       Sunday School:  3-Year-Olds — Rittenhouse Room R1; 4-Year-Olds — Janney House Room J2; Kindergarten — Janney House Room J1; 1st Grade — Rittenhouse Room R3; 2nd & 4th Grades — Parish Hall; 3rd Grade — Parish Library; 5th Grade — Rev. Kate’s & Pastor Mary’s Office; Middle School — Old School Building; Senior High — Catacombs

¨       Healing Rail: During the 11:15 service, and on occasion at the 7:45 and 9:00 services, the laying on of hands and anointing with holy oil is offered to everyone during the administration of Communion. Kneelers are located in front of the lectern (forward and to your left). Please come for your own needs or as an intercessor for others.

¨       Please join fellow parishioners and Fr. John at the Rectory at 12:30 p.m. for “Brunch and Banter”—food and fellowship, along with a brief discussion of the relationship between this year’s Annual Giving Campaign and our vision for St. James’.  Childcare will be available at the church.

¨       Youth Groups:  We’ll gather at MOE’s, a youth group favorite! Middle School meets from 5:00-6:00 p.m., and Senior High from 6:00-7:30 p.m. Bring $5 to cover dinner and ice cream…St. James’ will pay for the rest!

¨       The Baptism Preparation Class begins today for the November 4 Baptism date.  Classes will be held from 10:10-11:00 a.m. in the Breakout Room of the Old School Building.

KWP Registration closes tomorrow:  Kids With Purpose will accept registrations through Monday, October 1. Our first KWP class will begin on Wednesday, October 3. Please email any questions to kwpstjames@aol.com.

Foyer Groups (small groups of 8 to 10 St. James’ parishioners who meet for fellowship and dinner at a group member’s house once a month) are reorganizing on October 1.  All are welcome.  If you’d like to join, contact Doug & Joan Corderman at the Church Office at (703)777-1124 ASAP.

Pizza with a Purpose:  This Wednesday night program for youth was a huge hit last year, and it’s back again this year. PwP is kinda Bible study, kinda “this is what’s happening at school,” kinda “this is the kind of music I like,” and somehow, we tie it all in! Pastors Mary and Jeunée lead the program which meets on Wednesdays from 6:30-8:00 p.m.  Senior High: Catacombs and Middle School: Parish Hall.  No need to sign up, just show up.  Don’t worry if you missed the first gathering….come anytime.

Newcomers:  Reserve next Sunday, October 7, and join us at 10:15 in the Janney Parlor for a coffee social prepared especially for you.  Come receive a Welcome packet, ask your questions, have a tour of our facilities and generally get to know more about St. James’.

“Discovering St. James’” Class: Want to get connected with St. James’? Interested in learning more about the Episcopal Church and membership at St. James’? Then this class is for you. This informal and lively four-part class, taught by Fr. John and Rev. Kate on consecutive Sundays, begins on Sunday, October 7, from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. (location TBD). A light lunch is provided, and childcare is available. Contact Rev. Kate at the Church Office at (703) 777-1124 or kate@stjamesleesburg.org to sign up.

The Good Grief Support Group will begin meeting again on Wednesday, October 10, at 7:30 p.m., in the Janney Parlor.  The group meets on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month.  For further information, please contact Bill Newland at (703)737-6196.

Got maps? Join the Fellowship Events Committee and your fellow parishioners for the Third Annual St. James’ Road Rally, on Sunday, October 14. Be prepared to traverse the back roads of Loudoun, enjoy the turning leaves, get your car filthy, and solve vicious clues prepared by George Pellicano.  The first car will depart the church parking lot at 1:00 p.m. sharp.  Refreshments will be served at the end of the rally.  RSVP to George, Page Moffett or the Church Office at (703)777-1124.

Join the St. James’ Book Club by participating in Loudoun County Public Library’s One Book - One Community program.  We will meet Thursday, October 18, at 7:00 p.m. in the Janney Parlor to discuss The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.  Narrated by Death himself, this astounding novel tells the tale of a girl whose terrifying existence in Nazi Germany is redeemed only through the power of words.  Please bring a snack or beverage to share.  Contact Mary Pellicano at the Church Office at (703)777-1124 for more information.

Mark your calendar for the Annual Victory Celebration at Ida Lee to be held this year on Sunday, October 28, 5:00-7:30 p.m.

Float Builder Needed:  For the past few years, St. James’ youth have participated in the annual Halloween Parade sponsored by Ida Lee. The youth are capable float painters, but the actual building of the float takes someone with a little bit of carpentry knowledge. We have an idea for a theme (top secret!), but we need a builder. If you are interested, contact Pastor Mary. The date of the parade is Halloween night Wednesday, October 31.

Saturday Night Service Coming Soon:  We are now actively recruiting those who would like to be part of the new St. Gabriel’s Saturday night service held at 5:30 Saturday evening at St. James’. If you are interested in participating in this “come-as-you-are, family-friendly” service as, a) a regular worshipper, able to give us regular feedback in the early weeks of the new service, or b) part of the launch team to “make it all happen” (music team, leadership, creative ideas, etc.), contact Pastor Jeunée at pastor@saintgabriels.net or (703) 609-1818.

Interfaith Relief needs your help:  They need canned meat dinners, such as Chef Boyardee lasagna, raviolis, etc.  Also, they are in need of plastic shopping bags.  Please drop off donations on the stage in the Parish Hall.
