Today
¨
Welcome: No
matter who you are, or where you are in your faith journey, you are welcome
here. After the 7:45 service, please join us in the Parish Hall for a cup of
coffee and after the 9:00 and 11:15 services — weather permitting — outside the
Bell Tower for lemonade and iced tea.
¨
Adult Forum and
Sunday School, usually
meeting at 10:10 each Sunday, are both taking a much-deserved Sabbath rest for
the summer.
St. James’
All-Parish
Ministry Fair
and
Sunday
School Opening Day
Sunday,
September 9
We
invite you to join us for the All Parish Ministry Fair, located at the former
School Administration Building (located across from the church on North
Street), after each service. This is
your single best opportunity to visit with the many ministry leaders at St.
James’. Sunday school also “opens” at 10:10 a.m.
that day for children through 5th grade.
Sixth graders and older are invited to the Ministry Fair, and their
Sunday School will begin on Sunday, September 16.
Welcome Newcomers:
Please reserve Sunday, September 2, to join us for a special Newcomers’
coffee in the Janney Parlor at 10:15 a.m., after the 9:00 service, to meet,
greet, eat, ask your questions, and receive a welcome packet. There is no need to RSVP; just come.
It’s not too late to be a shareholder in our
summer mission trips! Our Shareholders’ Dinner is on Wednesday,
August 29 at 6:30 p.m. The youth
will be waiters and waitresses, and they will tell you about their trips to
North Carolina and Mississippi. We’ll also have lots of pictures to show
you. Families are welcome to attend the
dinner… but remember, you must be a Shareholder in order to attend. See Pastor Mary for more information.
St.
James’ Book Club: Part
travelogue, part spiritual journey, bestselling book Eat, Pray, Love: One
Woman’s Search for Everything across Italy, India and Indonesia, invites
the reader to accompany globe-trotting author Elizabeth Gilbert on her quest of
soul-searching and self-discovery. Join
the St. James’ Book Club as we discuss this lively memoir, and compare
Gilbert’s experiences with our own summer travels, both geographical and inward
on Thursday, September 13. We’ll
meet at 7:00 p.m. in the Janney Parlor.
All are welcome! Please bring a
snack or beverage to share. Contact Mary
Pellicano at the Church Office at (703)777-1124 for more information. (Want to get a head start on next month’s
book? We’ll be reading The Book
Thief by Markus Zusak in October.)
Oktoberfest is
coming soon. Please join us for
authentic German fare, music, and spirits on September 23, in the church
parking lot following the 11:15 service.
Sign up in the Narthex to bring your German culinary creations. Volunteering to help with this event is a
great way to get to know your fellow parishioners. Call the Church Office for more information at (703) 777-1124.
New EfM classes will
be forming soon, and existing classes may have room for new additions. EfM groups start meeting in September. For more information or to sign up, please
contact the EfM Ministry Head Alecia Moroz at the Church Office at (703)777-1124. Registration forms are also available in the
Church Office.
Couples Bible Study
Group starting in the Fall: Jim & Nancy Quinn are
forming a small group Bible study for couples which will start up in September.
If you’d like more information, please contact Nancy at the Church Office at (703)777-1124.
Operation Shoebox
will take place once again this year, and we need empty shoeboxes. The children of St. James’ fill the boxes
and send them overseas as Christmas gifts for underprivileged youth. Please bring your empty boxes to St James’,
and leave them on the Outreach table in the Narthex.
Curious about
acolyting? Acolytes
— those who serve at the altar on Sunday mornings — have an important role
assisting with worship at the 7:45, 9:00, and 11:15 services, as well as
special services during Christmas and Easter.
¨
Jr. Acolytes begin Grades 4-5 (9:00 service
only)
¨
Torchbearers begin Grades 6-12
¨
Crucifers begin Grades 9-12
Interested in training to be an Acolyte or just
want information? Contact Dottie Brannock at the Church Office at (703)777-1124.
Interested in participating in a Prayer Shawl Ministry? A love of
knitting and crocheting is combined into a prayerful ministry and spiritual
practice which reaches out to those in need of comfort or solace as well as
celebration and joy. Many blessings are prayed into every shawl. Shawls can be
used by those undergoing medical procedures, during illness and recovery, or
bereavement. If you’d like to get help get a prayer shawl ministry started here
at St. James’, please contact Rev. Kate at the Church Office at (703)777-1124 for
more information.
Coffee Hour Hosts
Needed: Now
that it is approaching Fall, we are seeing lots of newcomers, and the ministry
of hospitality on Sunday morning is one of the most important things we’re
doing. If you would like to help extend
a warm welcome to newcomers, old-timers — and everyone in between — please
contact Rev. Kate at the Church Office at (703)777-1124 or
kate@stjamesleesburg.org to volunteer as a coffee hour host.
The Good Grief Support
Group will begin meeting again in September. Anyone
who wishes to talk to someone in the meantime is welcome to call Bill
Newland at the Church Office at (703)777-1124.
