Today
¨
Newcomer? No
matter who you are, or where you are in your faith journey, you are welcome
here. After the 7:45 service, please join us in the Parish Hall for a cup of
coffee and after the 9:00 and 11:15 services — weather permitting — outside the
Bell Tower for lemonade and iced tea.
¨
Adult Forum and
Sunday School, usually
meeting at 10:10 each Sunday, are both taking a much-deserved Sabbath rest for
the summer.
Be a shareholder! It’s
not too late to sign up to hold a share in our summer youth mission trips. We have a group of 11 people going to
Mission on the Bay, MS, from August 19-24, and you can support them by
purchasing a $10 share in the trip. As
a Shareholder, you will receive a postcard from the youth while they are in
Mississippi, and you will also be invited to our Shareholders Dinner on
Wednesday, August 29 (see below)!
Please see Pastor Mary for more information.
Mission trip
shareholders, please remember to RSVP with the Church Office
at (703)777-1124 to our dinner on Wednesday, August 29 at 6:30 p.m. The youth will be waiters and waitresses, and
they will tell you about their trips to North Carolina and Mississippi. We’ll
also have lots of pictures to show you!
Families are welcome to attend the dinner… but remember, you must be a
Shareholder in order to attend. It’s
not to late to purchase a share!
Part travelogue, part spiritual journey,
bestselling book Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman’s Search for Everything across
Italy, India and Indonesia, invites the reader to accompany globe-trotting
author Elizabeth Gilbert on her quest of soul-searching and
self-discovery. Join the St. James’
Book Club as we discuss this lively memoir, and compare Gilbert’s experiences
with our own summer travels, both geographical and inward on Thursday,
September 13. We’ll meet at 7:00 p.m.
in the Janney Parlor. All are
welcome! Please bring a snack or
beverage to share. Contact Mary
Pellicano at the Church Office at (703)777-1124 for more information. (Want to get a head start on next month’s
book? We’ll be reading The Book
Thief by Markus Zusak in October.)
Happening at St. James’
Adult Volunteers
Needed: St.
James’ is hosting an Outreach Camp for middle school-aged youth from Monday,
August 27, through Thursday, August 30.
On those days, we would love to have some adult sponsors join us. We will travel to Capitol Hill, learn about
homelessness in Arlington, glean crops in Woodstock, and learn about
therapeutic riding in Middleburg. If
you have an interest in joining us, please contact Pastor Mary at (703)777-1124
x103.
New EfM classes will
be forming soon, and existing classes may have room for new additions. EfM groups start meeting in September. For more information or to sign up, please
contact the EfM Ministry Head Alecia Moroz at the Church Office at
(703)777-1124. Registration forms are
also available in the Church Office.
Operation Shoebox
will take place once again this year, and we need empty shoeboxes! The children of St. James’ fill the boxes
and send them overseas as Christmas gifts for underprivileged youth. Please bring your empty boxes to St James’,
and leave them on the Outreach table in the Narthex.
Oktoberfest is
coming soon! Please join us for
authentic German fare, music, and spirits on September 23, in the church
parking lot following the 11:15 service.
Sign up in the Narthex to bring your German culinary creations. Volunteering to help with this event is a
great way to get to know your fellow parishioners! Call the Church Office for more information at (703) 777-1124.
Loudoun Interfaith
Bridges invites members of St. James’ to its first Interfaith Picnic which will be
held on Sunday, August 19, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at The
Pavilion at Algonkian Regional Park. Sponsored by the Christian, Jewish,
Muslim, Quaker, Sikh, Baha’i, Buddhist and Hindu congregations which are part
of Loudoun Interfaith Bridges, the picnic will include a potluck dinner,
prayers and performances, and youth activities. While there is no cost to
participation, attendance is limited to 15 people per congregation, first come,
first served. If you wish to join in this celebration of prayer and chant
intended to inspire interfaith awareness and spirituality in our children,
youth, and faith communities, please let Rev. Kate know by Friday, August 17.
The pantry at Interfaith Relief is experiencing a shortage of the
following: macaroni & cheese, canned pasta/sauce, 100% juice in plastic or
cans, and school supplies. If you are a gardener, please consider donating some
of your “crop,” so that families in need can have fresh fruit and
vegetables. You may leave food
donations on the stage in the Parish Hall to be picked up by Interfaith Relief
on Sundays or donate to Interfaith Relief directly, Monday through Friday, 9:30
a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Loudoun Interfaith
Relief was established in 1991 by dedicated and compassionate volunteers
from area churches who were united by a commitment to offer support and
solutions to the working poor and homeless.
Thank you!
The Virginia Historical Society (428 North
Boulevard, Richmond, Virginia 23220; Phone: 804-358-4901) exhibit July 14
through January 13: The Episcopal Church in Virginia, 1607–2007, The
first Jamestown colonists brought with them the liturgy, theology, and
administrative practices of the Church of England. As part of the government of
Virginia until the Revolution, or as one of many churches serving Virginians
after 1776, the Anglican/Episcopal Church has played an important role as a
“middle way” between cultural extremes. This commemorative exhibition includes
rare objects and interesting images of buildings and services. It also profiles
people of shared faith, in a denomination marked by strong traditions,
struggling to adapt to an ever-changing world.
