Today
¨
Newcomer? No
matter who you are, or where you are in your faith journey, you are welcome
here. After the 7:45 service, please join us in the Parish Hall for a cup of
coffee and after the 9:00 and 11:15 services — weather permitting — outside the
Bell Tower for lemonade and iced tea.
¨
Adult Forum and
Sunday School, usually meeting
at 10:10 each Sunday, are both taking a much-deserved Sabbath rest for the
summer.
Many thanks to all those who made the St. James’
Day celebration a HUGE success, especially Rosie Reh, Dave Bukovskey, Page
Moffett, Ken Getty, Gary & Claudine Edelblute, Ed, Barb, & Adam
Modzelesky, Stephanie Allen, Jessica Billigmeier, Jim Koshar, and Sarah
& Eric DiPier.
Newcomers: Come to our next
Newcomers’ Coffee, especially for you, on Sunday, August 5, at 10:10 a.m., in
the Janney Parlor. We have a Welcome
packet for you, and you will have the opportunity to ask questions, and meet
our clergy.
Be a shareholder! It’s
not too late to sign up to hold a share in our summer youth mission trips. We have a group of 11 people going to
Mission on the Bay, MS, from August 19-24, and you can support them by
purchasing a $10 share in the trip. As
a Shareholder, you will receive a postcard from the youth while they are in
Mississippi, and you will also be invited to our Shareholders Dinner on
Wednesday, August 29 (see below)!
Please see Pastor Mary for more information.
Mission trip
shareholders, please remember to RSVP (703-777-1124) to our
dinner on Wednesday, August 29 at 6:30 p.m.
The youth will be waiters and waitresses, and they will tell you about
their trips to North Carolina and Mississippi. We'll also have lots of pictures
to show you! Families are welcome to attend the dinner...but remember, you must
be a Shareholder in order to attend! It's not to late to purchase a share!
St. Gabriel’s Vacation
Bible School: Wizards and Wonders—A Hero’s Adventure with
Harry Potter! Hogwarts is located in
the St. James’ Parish Hall, Sunday, July 29-Thursday, August 2, 6:00-8:30
p.m. Join us for an intergenerational
Vacation Bible School at Hogwarts!
We’ll spring off the favorite story of Harry Potter to see how God calls
us, marks us, equips us, and helps us face even the most dangerous challenges
through the self-sacrificing love of Jesus so that we can become the disciples
God created us to be. Come experience
Platform 9 3/4, a fun game of Quidditch, Professor McGonagall’s Transformation
Class, Owl Mail Delivery and more!
Dinner included. The cost is $25 per family (1-6 people) for the
week. Register with Diane Bell at the
St. Gabriel’s church office at (703)779-3616.
Adult Volunteers
Needed: St.
James’ is hosting an Outreach Camp for middle school-aged youth from Friday,
August 27 through Monday, August 30. On
those days, we would love to have some adult sponsors join us. We will travel to Capitol Hill, learn about
homelessness in Arlington, glean crops in Woodstock, and learn about
therapeutic riding in Middleburg. If
you have an interest in joining us, please contact Pastor Mary at (703)777-1124
x103.
Loudoun Interfaith
Bridges invites members of St. James’ to its first Interfaith Picnic which will be
held on Sunday, August 19, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at The
Pavilion at Algonkian Regional Park. Sponsored by the Christian, Jewish,
Muslim, Quaker, Sikh, Baha’i, Buddhist and Hindu congregations which are part
of Loudoun Interfaith Bridges, the picnic will include a potluck dinner,
prayers and performances, and youth activities. While there is no cost to
participation, attendance is limited to 15 people per congregation, first come,
first served. Join in this celebration of prayer and chant intended to inspire
interfaith awareness and spirituality in our children, youth, and faith
communities.
The pantry at Interfaith Relief is experiencing a shortage of the
following: macaroni & cheese, canned pasta/sauce, 100% juice in plastic or
cans, and school supplies. If you are a gardener, please consider donating some
of your “crop,” so that families in need can have fresh fruit and
vegetables. You may leave food
donations on the stage in the Parish Hall to be picked up by Interfaith Relief
on Sundays or donate to Interfaith Relief directly, Monday through Friday, 9:30
a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Loudoun Interfaith
Relief was established in 1991 by dedicated and compassionate volunteers
from area churches who were united by a commitment to offer support and
solutions to the working poor and homeless.
Thank you!
Audio Ministry
Expanding: From time to time we have recorded sermons
preached from the St. James’ pulpit and transferred them to CDs for listening
by parishioners after the Sunday services. If you’re interested in helping to
expand this ministry, we’d like to hear from you. Please contact Marnie
Montgomery at the Church Office at (703)777-1124.
The Virginia
Historical Society (428 North Boulevard, Richmond, Virginia 23220; Phone:
804-358-4901) exhibit July 14 through January 13: The Episcopal Church in
Virginia, 1607–2007 The first Jamestown colonists brought with them
the liturgy, theology, and administrative practices of the Church of England.
As part of the government of Virginia until the Revolution, or as one of many
churches serving Virginians after 1776, the Anglican/Episcopal Church has played
an important role as a “middle way” between cultural extremes. This
commemorative exhibition includes rare objects and interesting images of
buildings and services. It also profiles people of shared faith, in a
denomination marked by strong traditions, struggling to adapt to an
ever-changing world.
