What we do…
The Building Committee was appointed by the St. James’ Vestry to support the assessment of needs as well as the planning, design, and construction of renovated and expanded facilities. The Building Committee performs its responsibilities on behalf of the St. James’ Parish, and reports directly to the St. James’ Vestry.
The committee was created in response to the parish profile completed in the summer 2005 resulting in the St. James’ Vision issued in January 2006. The Vision calls for a mission driven expansion and renovation of the church’s facilities.
The St. James’ Vestry recognizes that to fully realize our vision of Christian community at St. James’ that we must update and expand our physical plant. The period of renovation and expansion of the St. James’ facilities will be an exciting time of new and creative activity in the life of our parish, and the results of this effort will enrich our parish for generations to come.
You may recall that a previous needs assessment was conducted during the 2002-2003 timeframe for renovation/expansion; however, these efforts were put on hold until the King Street property could be acquired. The previously gathered information has been used as a starting point for this latest effort.
The Building Committee has been meeting weekly since January 11, 2006, and has been busy:
- Refining assumptions and requirements.
- Conducting an informational meeting with the Leesburg Board of Architectural Review to better understand the steps in the process of getting approval to making structural changes to buildings within the historic area.
- Conducting a briefing session with the chair of St. Gabriel’s building committee to better understand where they are in their building process and the insights that they can offer.
- Completing an estimate of the square footage of our current facility.
- Having an outside professional assessment of facilities improvements that need to be considered as part of the design.
- Coordinating with the Finance Committee the development of financial forecasts.
- Releasing a Request for Proposal to qualified architectural firms to be followed by a period of due diligence, evaluation, negotiations and selection of an architect for the development of facility conceptual designs for presentation to the congregation and the Vestry in the first quarter of 2007.
How you can be involved...
The selected architects, cox graae + spack (cgs), will work with the Vestry, the ministry heads and the congregation to further develop our requirements. Look for future announcements as this exciting effort continues.
If you have any questions about the proposed renovation and expansion activities, please feel free to contact a member of the Building Committee.
